Why this project is important to us
Australia’s energy system is undergoing a major disruption which in turn is leading to energy affordability issues.
Through our work with the Co-operative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living, our team has seen the impact this energy disruption has had on some of Australia’s most vulnerable households. We have heard stories of the shame felt by a single mother in NSW having to weigh up buying one easter egg for her daughter or pay the electricity bill, an elderly couple in South Australia who “go to bed early so they don’t use the power” or the older man in Tasmania who has “gone four days without eating because I’ve had a power bill I’ve got to pay”. Energy poverty is real and getting the best value for money is critical for many Australian’s.
To us this project really matters, because every person deserves access to clean affordable energy and the successful delivery of this project will lead to better choices for Australian consumers and particularly for low income and vulnerable households.

Gain deeper understanding of your customers with UX and eye tracking research
Consumers need a better way to navigate the complicated energy market.
Eye tracking provides compelling objective data that reveals the human behaviour behind usability problems.
Our User Experience (UX) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers use this methodology to evaluate interfaces for the optimal user experience.
Usability and design are profound influences on user satisfaction and, ultimately, the success of “Energy Made Easy”. Diagnosing usability problems is simple by integrating eye tracking into your product development cycle. Applying these actionable insights can improve your users’ experiences and your website or application’s performance.
Cyber Intrusion Risk Mitigation
Our team has extensive experience in protecting high visibility web applications including sensitive customer-driven content (eg. Personal Loans Online applications) within the Commonwealth Bank NetBank website, identification of key areas of customer/business risk for Commonwealth Bank technology investments and most recently for a strategic devops transformation (including AWS migration) at OzForex, a publicly traded global payments services organisation.
For the Energy Made Easy project key risk mitigation strategies include:
- Minimise surface area of attacks (including opt-in rather than opt-out)
- Good design principles such as separation of tiers to minimise publicly accessible layers
- Defence in depth across all tiers/interfaces. eg. Authz, Authn, field validation (aka. Little Bobby Tables)
- Utilise AWS’s PAAS offerings
- The engagement of a Whitehat for Penetration testing as appropriate

Understanding of the NEM and Retail Energy Products
Our team brings extensive experience and subject matter expertise on Australia’s energy market, in particular we bring over a decades experience in understanding consumer and businesses behaviour as it relates to energy consumption.
Recently our team jointly published a peer reviewed paper with CSIRO and Monash University on the development of an agent based model of residential energy efficiency adoption in Australia. The purpose this model is to describe ‘the uptake of low carbon and energy efficient technologies and practices by households and under different interventions’. There is a particular focus on modelling non-financial incentives as well as the influence of social networks as well as the decision making by multiple types of agents in interaction, i.e. price comparison websites, not just households.
Australia’s energy landscape is becoming increasingly complex and disruptive with consumers being faced with making more choices from not only their choice of energy retailer but also the opportunity to become a prosumer generating and managing their own energy needs through to emerging opportunities like peer to peer energy trading using blockchain technology.
Our Project Team
Our proposed ‘Energy Made Easy’ multidiscipline leadership team brings a range of complementary skills to the project
