Regional Transition Strategy for Industrial City

Transitioning a large diverse region with $46 billion of economic activity across agriculture, tourism, education, manufacturing, and mining towards a net zero economy in a practical way that is economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable.

The Hunter region has a unique combination of characteristics that creates a natural advantage for the development of net zero solutions.

The Challenge

How do you transition a large diverse region with $46 billion of economic activity across agriculture, tourism, education, manufacturing, and mining towards a net zero economy in a practical way that is economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable?

Our Role

Our team was engaged to lead the establishment of Net Zero Hunter as a business alliance/consortium that brings together key local capabilities to advance net zero solutions to commercial readiness and establish the Hunter as the ‘Silicon Valley’ of Net Zero Solutions with a view to deploying solutions locally to achieve a net zero economy whilst establishing major new export markets for net zero solutions.

Net Zero Hunter

Net Zero Hunter will focus on advancing net zero solutions, technologies or applications towards commercial readiness, improve business models, address barriers or reduce overall industry costs in order to accelerate the transition towards a net zero economy.

NZH will focus on four priority areas where the Hunter has a comparative advantage; energy production, energy end-use, hydrogen and agriculture.

Energy Production

Help local industry reduce emissions by investing in innovative and replicable technologies and processes that increase the adoption of net zero energy solutions (including renewable electricity, renewable fuels, hydrogen and bioenergy).

Energy End-use

Help local industry develop solutions to use, store, manage and share energy as an enabler to a secure and stable net zero energy supply.

Hydrogen Hub

Help drive innovation in local hydrogen supply chains, from production to end use, creating opportunities across the local economy, and positioning the Hunter as a major renewable energy exporter.

Agriculture

Help mobilise local R&D and manufacturing capabilities to establish the Hunter as a net exporter of innovative agtech solutions designed to help the world achieve its net-zero emissions targets.
